Tata Power plans to establish a 10 GW solar ingot and wafer manufacturing plant in India, announced CEO Praveer Sinha on November 11.
This move addresses India’s dependency on imports for upstream solar components like ingots and wafers, which are essential for a self-sufficient solar supply chain. Currently, India has substantial capacity in modules (100 GW) and cells (27 GW) but lacks sufficient domestic production of these critical components.
The plant’s location is yet to be finalised, with Tata Power considering state incentives and the central government’s new solar manufacturing incentives. The company is also exploring investments in hydro and nuclear projects.
