Tata Steel, in collaboration with constructsteel, the steel construction market-development programme of the World Steel Association, has inaugurated a groundbreaking steel-based Zero Energy Building (ZEB) in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
The 1,836 sq. ft. building, constructed in just 3.5 months using advanced light-gauge steel frame (LGSF) technology, is designed to produce as much energy as it consumes, achieving net-zero energy use annually. Inaugurated by Tata Steel’s CEO, T V Narendran, the facility utilises high-performance glazing, insulated walls, and rooftop solar panels to generate clean energy, marking a significant step in India’s push towards sustainable, energy-efficient infrastructure. It also features building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), rainwater harvesting, and low-flow water fixtures to optimise resource consumption.
CEO Narendran highlighted the significance of the project, saying, “The steel-based zero energy building reflects the future of construction.” The LGSF technology allows for faster, more durable construction with minimal environmental impact, offering a model for replicating energy-efficient, low-carbon buildings across India.
