The Telangana government has sanctioned Rs 4,051 crore to overhaul Hyderabad’s electricity distribution system by replacing overhead lines with an underground power network across major urban zones.
The approval follows a recent cabinet decision aimed at eliminating long-standing tangles of overhead wiring in Greater Hyderabad. As per a government order issued by Energy Principal Secretary Navin Mittal, the project will be implemented across Banjara Hills, Secunderabad, Hyderabad Central and Hyderabad South circles. Notably, the GO states, “In order to improve the quality and reliability of the power supply, TGSPDCL conceptualised the programme for undergrounding the existing distribution network… This will attract industries and other investments into the metro zone.”
The project covers the conversion of all 33 kV, 11 kV and LT lines on major roads to underground cables, while LT lines in narrow lanes will shift to AB cables, with single trenches used where feasible. Additionally, the government has approved phased procurement of 3,000 MW of solar power by 2027 to strengthen the grid, promote renewables, and support carbon reduction targets.
