The Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel Project, India’s largest and longest urban road tunnel, is advancing swiftly under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

The 11.8 km twin tunnels, costing Rs 12,057 crore, will link Thane’s Ghodbunder Road with the Western Express Highway in Borivali, cutting travel time from over an hour to just 15 minutes. Divided into two packages—5.75 km from Borivali and 6.09 km from Thane, the project uses advanced tunnel boring machines (TBMs) named ‘Nayak’ and ‘Arjuna,’ supplied by Herrenknecht India. Excavation of the Thane TBM launching shaft, started in October 2024, is nearly complete, and the casting yard is fully operational.

Land acquisition in Thane is almost done, while rehabilitation of affected families in Borivali is underway. Featuring two traffic lanes, an emergency lane, and safety cross-passages every 300 mtrs., the tunnels will include modern ventilation, fire, and signage systems. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reaffirmed completion by December 2028.
