The doubling of the railway track between Thiruvananthapuram Central and Parassala, part of the larger Thiruvananthapuram-Kanyakumari rail line project, is progressing smoothly, with approx. 70 percent of the work completed.
The government has approved the 86.5-km rail doubling project along the Thiruvananthapuram-Kanyakumari route to enhance capacity. The single track currently causes frequent train crossings and speed limitations. The project will ease operational pressure, allow more passenger and freight services, and improve punctuality, officials said. The project aims to improve connectivity, reduce delays, and address operational challenges on Southern Railway's southernmost trunk route. Initially, the project faced delays due to land acquisition disputes between landowners, residents, and contractors, which had slowed construction for months. However, these legal and compensation issues have now been resolved, allowing work to resume at full speed.
The work between Parassala and Nagercoil is moving faster and is expected to be completed ahead of the Thiruvananthapuram-Parassala stretch. The project, which is expected to be finished by August 2026, will help reduce speed constraints, support more passenger and freight services, and improve punctuality.
