The Union government is set to extend the deadline for Smart City projects in Thiruvananthapuram, which officially ended on 31 March, 2025, until December. The extension will allow the completion of major pending projects, including the renovation of Palayam Connemara Market and Chalai Market, as well as the construction of multi-level car parking (MLCP) facilities at Vaniyamkulam and Putharikandam.
The redevelopment of Rajaji Nagar Colony also remains a priority. Smart City Thiruvananthapuram (SCTL), the implementing agency, has already secured an additional two-month extension for the Smart Road projects, with only final road markings and signage installation remaining. The National Smart Cities Mission would approve the December deadline. 95 percent of Smart City funds had already been utilised, surpassing many other states.
The MLCP at Putharikandam is expected to be completed by May, and Rajaji Nagar Colony redevelopment also will be completed within this year. Chalai and Palayam market renovations, too, would get over by December. Additionally, the development of Shanghumugham Beach is complete, with only the relocation of vendors to designated kiosks pending.
Several projects, including the renovation of Captain Lakshmi Park, Sree Chitra Park, and the installation of pop-up tents and open-air auditoriums at Putharikandam, have already been completed.
