Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, has announced three inland waterway projects in Mizoram, aimed at improving trade, tourism, and regional connectivity.
These projects focus on the Tlawng and Chhimtuipui rivers, with key initiatives including navigability surveys and the construction of modern terminals and jetties. The new infrastructure is expected to provide cost-effective, faster transport options, which will be crucial for the development of this remote North-eastern state. The government has earmarked Rs 89 lakh for hydrographic and techno-economic feasibility studies on the Tlawng river stretch, and Rs 1.42 crore for hydrographic surveys on the Chhimtuipui river. Additionally, Stage-I construction is underway for terminals and jetties in southern Mizoram’s Lunglei district, with an estimated cost of Rs 9.82 crore.
Minister Sonowal also emphasised the strategic significance of the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project, which aims to enhance connectivity between northeast India and Myanmar.
