Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, on 11 December, 2025 flagged off India’s first indigenous hydrogen fuel-cell vessel at Namo Ghat in Varanasi, marking a significant step towards modernising inland water transport.
The launch aligns with the government’s broader efforts to prioritize clean transport and enhance connectivity. The hydrogen-powered vessel places India alongside countries like China, Norway, the Netherlands, and Japan, which already operate hydrogen vessels. Minister Sonowal emphasised the milestone, stating, “This is not just technological progress, but a sign that we are advancing confidently towards green energy and indigenous solutions.” He also highlighted the role of the Prime Minister's leadership in driving the speed of innovation across sectors.
The vessel is part of the ongoing modernization of inland waterways, focusing on eco-friendly solutions, improving public convenience, and bolstering the transport infrastructure in the country.
