Titagarh Rail Systems (TRSL) has entered the forged wheel manufacturing business through a joint venture with Ramkrishna Forgings. This strategic move aims to address the ongoing shortage of wheelsets, which has disrupted train and coach production in recent quarters. The initiative aligns with the Government of India’s "Atmanirbhar Bharat" and import substitution goals, promoting domestic self-reliance in critical railway components.
TRSL officials confirmed that the company’s target of producing 950 to 1,000 wagons per month was hampered due to wheelset supply constraints, primarily from the Rail Wheel Factory in Bangalore, which is the designated supplier under railway board contracts.
Umesh Chowdhary, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of TRSL, called the venture a “national service and a big opportunity,” emphasising the urgent need to end reliance on imported forged wheels. With production expected to stabilize from June, this new vertical is poised to significantly boost TRSL’s operations and reinforce India’s railway manufacturing capabilities.
