Torrent Power (TPL) has submitted a detailed proposal to secure a power distribution licence for Nagpur city and adjoining rural areas, pledging a Rs 3,110 crore investment over five years.
The plan focuses on modernising infrastructure, ensuring reliable supply, and offering tariffs five to seven percent lower than Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL). Coverage will span key urban divisions like Civil Lines, Congress Nagar, Gandhibaugh, and Mahal, along with rural belts such as MIDC, Mouda, and Umred.
TPL has committed to serving all consumer segments, including low-usage households, in line with the Universal Service Obligation. Nagpur’s current peak demand exceeds 1,000 MW, with 86 percent of consumers being residential, though commercial and industrial segments consume over half of total power. Demand is expected to grow 25 percent in five years, pushing annual sales from 33 million units to 1,280 million units.
TPL plans a fully underground network in urban areas, and a 30 percent-underground/70 percent-overhead hybrid in rural zones, alongside smart metering, SCADA automation, and GIS-based monitoring.
