Japan’s Tsugami has opened its first Indian assembly and foundry facility at Oragadam in Chennai, marking a major milestone in the company’s global expansion.
The Rs 300-crore plant is now one of only three Tsugami facilities worldwide, alongside those in Japan and China. Spanning 3,00,000 sq. ft., it will enable complete domestic production of machine tools—from raw materials to finished machines, while supporting an annual assembly capacity of 3,000 machines and a foundry capacity of 6,000 tonne. The company expects to employ around 700 people directly and another 300 through its wider ecosystem.
Leaders from Japan and Tamil Nadu highlighted strong industrial ties, with JETRO’s Kaoru Shiraishi noting that the facility showcases what is possible when “Japanese technology” is paired with India’s skilled workforce and expanding market. State officials and Tsugami India’s leadership emphasised that the project strengthens precision manufacturing in India and reflects confidence in Tamil Nadu’s talent pool and industrial environment.
