On 16 February 2014, Rahul Gandhi, vice-president of All India Congress Committee, and Oscar Fernandes, Minister for Road Transport and Highways, inaugurated Tumkur-Chitradurga section of NH-48 in Karnataka.
The six lane stretch of NH-48 was developed by IRB Tumkur Chitradurga Tollway, an SPV floated by IRB Infrastructure, with an investment of Rs 1,200 crore. The road project, with a length of 145 km, has been developed on BOT (Toll) basis in DBFO mode, under NHDP Phase-V.
The Tumkur-Chitradurga section of NH-48 was first built as a four lane National Highway under the Golden Quadrilateral project.
