The Uttar Pradesh government has launched an urban transformation initiative, earmarking Rs 20,000 crore each for the cities of Meerut, Mathura, and Kanpur over the next five years.
This Rs 60,000 crore push aims to modernise key tier-II cities, enhance livability, and attract private investment through structured short, medium, and long-term development projects. Government departments including Housing, Urban Development, Public Works, have been instructed to prepare and implement projects in a time-bound and measurable manner.
The initiative is aligned with national schemes like AMRUT, Smart Cities Mission, and HRIDAY, and reflects the state's commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The plan kicked off with the Meerut Development Authority (MDA) presenting a comprehensive blueprint titled “Revitalising Meerut: Transforming the City Through Theme-Based Urban Development Projects.”
The roadmap includes 93 projects valued at Rs 18,262 crore focusing on six priority areas: enhancing public spaces, improving connectivity, upgrading utilities and social infrastructure, promoting industrial and housing development, preserving heritage, and implementing targeted redevelopment.
