Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, has virtually inaugurated the steel-cutting ceremony for India's first all-electric green tug, marking a significant step toward sustainable maritime operations.
The tug, designed for Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Kandla, is part of the Ministry's Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP), aimed at advancing India's maritime decarbonization efforts. The virtual event was attended by key figures, including Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shantanu Thakur, and senior officials from DPA and related organisations. The tug is being constructed by Atreya Shipyard, with technical support from Kongsberg and other partners.
The project is expected to play a crucial role in reducing the carbon footprint of India’s shipping industry, aligning with global sustainability goals.
