The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEFs) has sanctioned an urban forest project at Veermalakunnu in Kasaragod, Kerala, covering 38 hectares to boost eco-tourism and preserve biodiversity.

The initiative will be executed in two phases: nine acres managed by the Tourism department under the Kasaragod Development Package, and 14 hectares under the Forest department with Rs 36 lakh approved as the first instalment. Divisional Forest Officer K. Ashraf confirmed that the project will replace acacia with native and fruitbearing trees, and include eco-friendly facilities such as walkways and a watchtower, with large-scale construction strictly prohibited.

Veermalakunnu, famous for its laterite landscape, wildflowers, and sweeping views of the Neeleswaram river, is being developed into a family-friendly and adventure tourism hub offering trekking and rappelling. The DPR and working plan are under preparation, with the project expected to transform the scenic hill into a sustainable destination.
