With the ‘validation flight’ for Bhogapuram Greenfield International Airport scheduled for December, the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) has fixed a May 2026 deadline to complete seven major master plan roads totalling 26.72 km.
These roads, costing Rs 156 crore including CSR contributions, require coordination among multiple departments and private landowners. Progress has slowed due to land acquisition hurdles, particularly the procurement of 75 acres. Compensation is being offered through cash, alternative sites, and TDRs, though only a few landowners have opted for TDRs. A VMRDA official said, “So far, we have issued 155 TDRs out of 348… we are on the right track to complete the work within the deadline.”
The seven roads are expected to ease highway congestion and enable faster access to the new airport from surrounding districts. These include eight km road from Adivivaram BRTS to Gandigundam (Rs 40 crore), awaiting forest clearance, 2.2 km road from Anandapuram NH to Gambhiram Reservoir. expansion from Shivashakti Nagar to VUDA Haritha project (Rs 7.65 crore). expansion from Paradeshipalem to Gambhiram (Rs 5.04 crore). road from Nerallavalasa to Tallavalasa (Rs 24 crore). widening from Boyapalem Junction to Kapuluppada (Rs 15 crore). 6.32 km widening from Chippada to Polipilli (Rs 37.92 crore).
Additionally, plans include widening 15 internal roads for Rs 390 crore, developing a six-lane beach corridor, and constructing four elevated corridors. Airport works are reportedly ahead of schedule.
