The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has granted in-principle clearance to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for constructing the Rs 2,395 crore Versova-Madh cable-stayed bridge, significantly improving coastal connectivity in Mumbai.
Announced by Union Minister Piyush Goyal, the 2.06-km bridge will cut travel time from 45–60 minutes to just 10 minutes, linking Versova directly with Madh Island and integrating with the upcoming coastal road to Bhayander. Originally proposed in Mumbai’s 1967 Development Plan, the project was delayed due to environmental and regulatory hurdles. It received clearances from the forest department and coastal authorities and awaits a final nod from the Bombay High Court.
Tenders were floated in March 2023, and work is expected to begin by year-end with a three-year completion timeline.
