Vizhinjam Port, operated by Adani Ports, is set to transform into a sea–air transshipment hub by integrating its operations with Thiruvananthapuram International Airport.
The port will streamline crew changes and cargo movement with the creation of an integrated check post (ICP) for customs, immigration, and paperwork. The proximity of the airport, just 16 km away, makes it a unique feature, as no other major port has an airport so close. "The documentation is going to be easy because of the ICP. So, it will be easy for the port to move cargo using flights," said an official. The project aims to boost efficiency, generate revenue, and improve cargo handling.
The airport is also planning a new cargo complex and passenger terminal to accommodate future growth.
