The Water Resources Department (WRD) is set to initiate crucial canal strengthening works in Chennai as part of a Rs 1,321-crore project under the Comprehensive Water Resources Development Programme.
The move focuses on ensuring the uninterrupted flow of Krishna water from Andhra Pradesh to Chennai's reservoirs. A total of 254 works will be carried out across Tamil Nadu, including the restoration of water bodies, flood mitigation structures, dam upgrades, and new irrigation systems. In Tiruvallur district, the Kandaleru-Poondi (K-P) Canal—vital for water transfer to Chennai—will be reinforced over two km with slope protection lining and retaining walls at a cost of Rs 10.20 crore.
The canal has been receiving 500 cusecs of Krishna water daily, but seepage losses of 5%-10% and bund erosion pose risks. Strengthening efforts near Uthukottai and Tamaraikuppam will mitigate these issues. Additionally, a feeder canal from Poondi to Red Hills will be upgraded over 3.3 km at Rs 10.75 crore, including culvert and inlet repairs. Chennai has received 785 mcft of Krishna water since 01 July, with the potential to reach 1,300 mcft, equivalent to a month's supply—if flow continues consistently.
