The Water Resources Department (WRD) has begun work on a Rs 77.30 crore project to build two new check dams and restore existing ones across the Palar river in Tirupattur district.

The new structures at Amballur and Sangalikuppam villages are aimed at preventing floods during the monsoon while storing excess rainwater for irrigation and groundwater recharge. According to officials, the project will significantly improve water availability for agriculture in nearby villages. Assistant Executive Engineer S Balaji said, “While the new check dams will be completed in 18 months, other works such as restoration of existing check dams and pipe-laying works will be done by December 2026.”

Funded by NABARD under the Permanent Floods Restoration Scheme 2024–25, the two new check dams will together cost Rs 58.50 crore and have a combined capacity of 2.51 mcft. Restoration of damaged check dams, strengthening of retaining walls, removal of encroachments and river widening are also part of the project, which is expected to reduce flooding and support multi-season cropping.
