The Maharashtra government and Shri Tatyasaheb Kore Warana Cooperative Navshakti Nirman Sanstha have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to set up a 240 MW pumped storage hydropower project (PSHP) at Tillari dam in Sindhudurg district. This marks the first such agreement with a cooperative entity among the 16 PSHP MoUs signed in the state to date.
With an investment of Rs 1,008 crore, the project will use water from the upper reservoir to generate electricity via pressure turbines before pumping it back, thereby enabling efficient energy storage. The pumping process will be powered by a co-located floating solar plant, avoiding approx. five lakh tonne of CO2 emissions annually—equivalent to the emissions of 4.5 lakh vehicles.
Vinay Kore, MLA and head of the Warana Group, highlighted the project's role in enhancing grid stability amid the growing unreliability of renewable sources. He emphasized the Group's proven track record with four hydroelectric projects. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis lauded the Warana Group’s contributions across industries and expressed confidence in the project’s timely execution, calling it a significant step towards Maharashtra’s energy security and sustainable growth.
