West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee laid the foundation stone for the Gangasagar Setu, a four-lane bridge over the Muriganga river which will provide permanent road connectivity between Sagar Island and the mainland.
The five km-long project, estimated to cost Rs 1,670 crore, will connect Lot 8 in Kakdwip with Kachuberia on Sagar Island, a major pilgrimage and tourism destination in the Sundarbans. The bridge is expected to significantly improve access to the island, which currently depends on ferry services frequently affected by weather and tidal conditions. Addressing a public gathering, the CM said the project would boost trade, tourism and overall connectivity for local residents and visitors. Construction is expected to be completed within two to three years, and Larsen & Toubro has been awarded the contract.
The Chief Minister also highlighted regional development initiatives, including the construction of 37 bridges in South 24 Parganas since 2011, improved electricity access on Sagar Island, and the creation of a dedicated Sundarbans Police District.
