The State Board for Wildlife (SBWL) has recently approved a crucial upgrade to Bengaluru’s 400kV power transmission line, paving the way for uninterrupted, high-quality power supply to the rapidly growing technology corridor in eastern parts of the city.

The long-pending project involves replacing the nearly 40-year-old transmission line connecting Somanahalli on Kanakapura Road to Mylasandra in Electronics City, which has been a critical power lifeline for eastern Bengaluru, also extending to Hoodi, Narasapura, Kolar, and parts of Rayalaseema in Andhra Pradesh. The upgrade involves erecting 24 new towers and stringing nearly 10 km of transmission lines, with approvals required for sections passing through Bannerghatta National Park. The project will strengthen Bengaluru’s power infrastructure, reduce risk of outages, and support the city’s growing tech and residential hubs.

A senior engineer from Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation (KPTCL) said, “The existing transmission line is a critical source for the 400kV Mylasandra substation, which handles transmission of 1,500 MW to 2,000 MW of power on a daily basis. Due to the increased load, the station reported low-voltage issues, and ensuring quality power supply became a challenge.”
