The work on Chitlapakkam lake will be restored soon as the Water Resources Department, Tamil Nadu expects to start eco-restoration of the waterbody by end of November 2019.
Chitlapakkam lake is the uppermost tank in the Keelkattalai cluster of waterbodies and was originally used for irrigation, with an ayacut area of 219 acre. The capacity of the lake, which was 7.02 million cu ft, has been reduced by 24 percent due to sedimentation, over three decades.
The tenders for the project worth Rs 25 crore will be finalised in a few days. It will be executed with financial assistance from the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and completed in a year.
Under the eco-restoration project, the Water Resources Department plans to strengthen the tank bund and form a new foreshore bund for a distance of 960 mtr. A footpath will be laid on the tank bund. The lake is spread over 50 acre now.
