The world’s first port road made using steel slag technology has been developed at Hazira, Gujarat, marking a significant milestone in sustainable infrastructure.
The road, built using industrial steel slag waste, was developed with CSIR-CRRI's innovative steel slag road technology. This eco-friendly and cost-effective solution aligns with India’s waste-to-wealth and green infrastructure goals.
In addition to this, CSIR-CRRI has introduced its MSS+ (Modified Mix Seal Surfacing Plus) technology for road construction in Uttar Pradesh, resulting in over 200 km of green roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). The technology ensures durable roads that can withstand all weather conditions without heating aggregates or bitumen. Furthermore, CSIR-CRRI, in partnership with BPCL and NHAI, developed a waste plastic-based Geocell road on the DND-Faridabad-KMP Expressway.
The initiative promotes a circular economy, using approx. 30 tonne of end-of-life plastic. CSIR-CRRI has also demonstrated its “ECOFIX” technology for pothole repairs in Karnataka and Assam.
