Pune’s Yerawada–Katraj underground tunnel project has taken a step forward as its pre-feasibility report has been completed and received a positive response from the Chief Minister’s office.
The project, proposed as a long-term solution to Pune’s traffic congestion, aims to create an underground corridor connecting the city’s eastern and southern parts. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasised the need for such connectivity, stating that surface road expansion had reached its limits. The Yerawada-Katraj tunnel is part of a broader plan to develop a 54-km underground road network to improve north-south connectivity in Pune, which faces heavy vehicular load. The tunnel is expected to reduce travel time, ease congestion, and divert traffic underground, making the city’s transport system more efficient.
The estimated cost of the underground network is around Rs 32,000 crore, and once completed, it will link key areas, including Sinhagad Road, Kothrud, and Khadki, with the inner ring road.
