ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has obtained a technology license to process and market steel slag aggregates for road construction, in collaboration with CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CRRI).

This innovative technology enables the conversion of steel manufacturing by-products into cost-effective and durable road materials, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional aggregates. Steel slag roads are projected to be 30-40 percent more economical and can last up to three times longer than conventional bitumen roads, significantly reducing maintenance costs. The processed slag's superior strength makes it suitable for diverse terrains and climatic conditions, including coastal and rugged regions.

With India's steel production capacity expected to generate 60 million tonne of steel slag over the next five years, this initiative supports large-scale industrial by-product utilization. AM/NS India’s Gujarat plant will serve as the flagship site for implementing this steel slag valorization technology.  The Steel Ministry is actively promoting this technology in coordination with the Ministry of Science & Technology and the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways.
