Assam is set to become the first Indian state government to directly engage in oil production, following a significant hydrocarbon discovery at the Namrup Borhat-1 well in Dibrugarh district. This discovery, made in collaboration with Oil India (OIL), marks a transformative step for Assam’s energy sector.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the development on social media, calling it a “major step forward in energy security and economic resilience.” Assam, historically central to India’s oil industry, is home to the nation’s first oil well in Digboi and continues to be a major contributor to domestic crude production. In 2023-24, the state produced 4,361 thousand tonne of crude, ranking third after Rajasthan and Gujarat.

This breakthrough shifts Assam’s role from a passive participant to an active stakeholder in the oil sector. The state will now benefit directly from oil revenues and royalties, ensuring long-term economic gains and enhanced energy availability. The move is expected to boost regional development, attract investments, and strengthen Assam's position in India's energy landscape.
