The Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) is set to explore a Water Metro system as part of the city’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan, inspired by Kochi’s operational model.
The 53-km proposed corridor would connect East Coast Road with Napier Bridge via Chennai’s coastal and inland waterways. Electric or hybrid ferries are being considered, with a feasibility study underway to assess navigability, costeffectiveness, and environmental impact.
However, a previous plan to integrate parts of National Waterway 4 (NW-4) into a functional transport system was abandoned. Officials now stress the need to integrate the water metro with metro rail and bus networks, coupled with continuous river restoration. Low-draft vessels and suitable terminals are being considered to navigate shallow stretches.
The NW-4, extending 1,078 km across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Puducherry, may also see renewed focus if the project gains traction. Authorities aim for a system which not only improves mobility but also promotes tourism and sustainable urban transport.
