The new terminal and a fourth runway of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) are likely to start commercial operations in September, 2023. With this, the Delhi Airport will become the only Indian airport to have four runways.

The fourth runway, which will be around 4,400 mtrs long and 75 mtrs wide, is expected to considerably reduce the flight take off and landing times and thus enable ease of aircraft handling and operations at the airport.

The new runway is part of Phase III-A of the Delhi airport's expansion plan, as it prepares for better infrastructure and better connectivity to meet the growing demand for air travel and provide world-class facilities to passengers. Earllier, Delhi International Airport (DIAL) had announced an investment of Rs 9,800 crore towards the upgradation of existing Terminal-I, the construction of a fourth runway and other development works to augment the airport's capacity to 100 million passengers a year from the current capacity of 66 million.

As per ACI data, the Delhi airport handled almost 5.95 crore passengers in 2022, making it one of the fastest-growing airports in the Asia-Pacific region.
