The Indian government is in the process of developing a Rs 5,000 crore scheme under the proposed National Mission for Sustainable Steel to promote the adoption of clean steel-making technologies and reduce carbon emissions across the industry.

According to Steel Secretary Sandeep Poundrik, the scheme will support all steel manufacturers, with 75–80 percent of funds specifically allocated for secondary steel players. The initiative aims to encourage innovation and cleaner production processes, with financial incentives based on the extent of emission reduction achieved compared to previous years.

Speaking at the 'FT Live Energy Transition Summit India' in New Delhi, Secretary Poundrik emphasized that the mission aligns with India's commitment to the Paris Agreement and its broader goal of becoming a net-zero economy. Steel is considered one of the most carbon-intensive sectors, making it a key focus for decarbonisation efforts.

The scheme is expected to become operational in the coming months and will measure success primarily through actual reductions in carbon emissions rather than just technology upgrades.
