IIT Bombay has made a significant breakthrough in solar technology through its start-up Advanced Renewable Tandem-Photovoltaics India (ART-PV India).

The innovation is a four-terminal Silicon/CdTe-Perovskite tandem solar cell, achieving 29.8 percent conversion efficiency, one of the highest recorded in India. This advancement is expected to push solar efficiency beyond 30%, outperforming current technologies and marking a major step in India’s clean energy mission.

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Pralhad Joshi, visited the National Centre for Photovoltaic Research and Education (NCPRE) at IIT-B on15 July, 2025. He announced that MNRE will support ART-PV India with Rs 83 crore to set up a pilot manufacturing facility at IIT Bombay.

The Minister emphasised the government’s commitment to homegrown innovation under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission, encouraging IIT-B and ART-PV India to focus on commercial deployment and industry integration.
