Bharat Earth Movers (BEML) is set to manufacture India’s first bullet train at its existing facility in Bengaluru which also produces Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets. The prototype will be developed starting September 2025, with rollout for oscillation and speed trials scheduled by December 2026 on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor.

The trainsets, each comprising eight coaches, are designed for speeds up to 280 kmph. BEML is currently finalising the design and aims to finish the first coach by the end of FY26. Once approved, mass production of 15 more coaches will follow. BEML has engaged a global design verification agency and an independent validation body to ensure international safety and quality standards.

The project, costing Rs 866.87 crore - about Rs 27.86 crore per coach, is significantly more cost-effective than Japan’s Shinkansen coaches priced between Rs 46–48 crore. BEML highlights its use of indigenous materials and components, including stainless steel.

This initiative aligns with the Ministry of Railways’ vision under the National Infrastructure Pipeline, which includes seven additional high-speed corridors. The MAHSR is largely funded by JICA, covering 81 percent of costs via a 0.1 percent interest loan.
