Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, who also oversees the Irrigation portfolio, has announced that the state has sought Rs 11,122.76 crore in funding for six major irrigation and water-related projects. Shivakumar met Union Water Resources Minister C R Patil in New Delhi to formally appeal for the funds.
Among the proposed allocations are Rs 804.66 crore for the Sonnathi Lift Irrigation Project, Rs 2,660.70 crore for the Indi Branch Canal under the Upper Krishna Project, Rs 3,000 crore for the third stage of the Malaprabha Canal, and Rs 1,610 crore for the Benne Halla flood prevention project. He also appealed for 25 percent Central assistance for the Yettinahole project, citing its focus on providing drinking water to drought-prone districts.
However, the project faces hurdles due to pending clearances from the Forest Department, though assurances were given by the Union Environment Minister to resolve the issue. Shivakumar added that the Upper Bhadra Project, a significant lift irrigation scheme targeting over 2.25 lakh hectares across four districts, is also awaiting central funds after submitting revised estimates. “We have learnt that one project has been approved, but we are yet to receive official confirmation,” Shivakumar said.
