Kochi Metro Rail (KMRL) has initiated a preliminary feasibility study to extend the Water Metro services to Cochin International Airport (CIAL).

Officials said the project would "significantly provide relief to the commuters by cutting the travel time and reducing traffic congestion" in key city regions. The plan envisions passengers reaching the airport by boat from Aluva, bypassing road congestion. The study is expected to be completed within a month, followed by preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR). According to officials, the authority is also considering expanding the Water Metro to the outskirts.

Currently, the service connects 38 terminals across 10 island communities, boosting both daily commuting convenience and regional financial activity. Linking the airport is expected to benefit thousands of passengers daily. Last month, KMRL announced additional projects to strengthen connectivity. Special metro and water metro services will run till 10.45 pm from September 2–4 to handle Onam festival crowds, ensuring faster travel and reduced congestion.
