The Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) Project Phase III in Mumbai has received a major boost as the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) has granted final clearance for the transfer of 19.43 hectares of reserved forest land beneath Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
The approval enables construction of twin tunnels, each 4.7 km long and 45.70 m wide, as part of the east-west connectivity initiative. The BMC has begun compliance procedures in line with the Ministry's stipulated terms. The GMLR, spanning 12.20 km in four phases, will slash travel time between Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs from 75 to 25 minutes, saving commuters 50 minutes, reducing fuel use, and cutting annual carbon emissions by an estimated 22,400 tonne.
Phase III includes a 1.22 km triple-lane box tunnel at Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari and the twin tunnels under SGNP, covering a total of 6.65 km. Constructed 20–160 m underground, the tunnels will feature advanced lighting, ventilation, fire protection, CCTV surveillance, and utility corridors. Final approval was granted on 01 July, 2025 under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980, allowing the project to proceed.
