The Government of India has approved a revised project cost of Rs 1,925.28 crore under the Prime Minister’s Development Package (PMDP)-2015 for critical transmission lines and grid stations in Ladakh’s Nubra and Zanskar regions.
The project cost was initially Rs 1,203.08 crore but was revised after thorough scrutiny by the Ministry of Power’s Monitoring Committee during 2022–23. The 220 KV Phyang–Disket and Drass–Padum transmission lines aim to strengthen Ladakh’s power infrastructure and are being implemented by REC Power Development and Company (RECPDCL) with POWERGRID providing consultancy.
This upgrade will enable the phasing out of diesel generator (DG) sets currently used in Nubra and Zanskar, replacing around 20 DG stations of seven MVA capacity in Nubra and eight DG stations of five MVA in Zanskar. The project, with additional realignments in sensitive areas like Manman Top and Drang Drung Glacier, is slated for completion by October 2026. Rs 99 crore has already been paid for wildlife clearances, ensuring smooth progress.
