The Tamil Nadu government has approved a Rs 8,000 crore investment to develop 20,000 km of rural roads under the Mudalvarin Grama Saalaigal Membattu Thittam (MGSMT), the Chief Minister's Rural Roads Development Scheme.

According to a state government release outlining the achievements of the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department, Chief Minister MK Stalin approved the upgrade of 20,000 km of rural roads under the scheme.  As of now, 9,690 projects covering 12,572 km have been completed at a cost of Rs 4,609 crore, while work on another 6,671 km is underway with a budget of Rs 3,529 crore. The MGSMT scheme was launched in 2022–23 to improve rural connectivity and infrastructure. In addition to road development, the state is scaling up its housing initiative under the Kalaignarin Kanavu Illam Scheme, aiming to make Tamil Nadu hut-free by 2030. Rs 7,000 crore has been sanctioned to build two lakh houses over the next two years.

So far, 72,081 houses have been completed, while the rest are in various stages of construction. To renovate older rural houses built before 2000–01, the state has allocated Rs 1,041.32 crore in FY25 to repair 1.48 lakh homes across villages.
