Thiruvananthapuram is set to undergo a Rs 133.5 crore solid waste management transformation under the CITIIS 2.0 initiative, aiming for a zero-garbage status.

The project, jointly funded by the state government (Rs 103.7 crore) and the Centre (Rs 29.8 crore), will introduce refuse-derived fuel (RDF) plants, recycling stations, and technology-driven waste handling solutions. The detailed project report, submitted by Smart City Thiruvananthapuram (SCTL), is nearing final evaluation, with national and international consultants reviewing modern infrastructure and operational plans.

Although the Centre’s final approval is expected by November 2025, implementation will start only after local body elections, with the new council prioritiSing project rollout by December. The initiative plans to complete the overhaul within four years, focusing on machinery procurement, infrastructure development, and maintenance contracts. Site identification for RDF plants and material collection facilities has been finaliSed, marking a significant step towards sustainable urban waste management in the state capital.
