Reliance Power has received approval from the Cabinet Committee on Investment (CCI) for its Tilaiya ultra mega power project (UMPP) in Jharkhand.
As per CCI's view, Reliance Power may not have to provide non-forest land to compensate for the loss of forest land acquired for the proposed plant.
With this, the Tilaiya plant is now expected to be treated on par with the other public sector projects and therefore it will be exempted from providing compensatory afforestation for the loss of the forest land.
The power project at Tilaiya in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand, with 4,000 MW power capacity, is to be developed by the SPV, Jharkhand Integrated Power. In January 2009, the project was handed over to Reliance Power by Power Finance Corporation - the nodal agency for UMPPs. The project entails an investment of Rs 24,000 crore.
