The Kerala government has floated fresh tenders
for development of the Vizhinjam container terminal. This move ostensibly
follows the lukewarm response that the earlier rounds had attracted (See Related
News.)
The Rs.1,850 crore project envisages the
development of a transshipment terminal at the Vizhinjam port, located 16 km
from Thiruvanthapuram on the west coast. The terminal aims to handle Panmax
vessels to begin with. Handling of larger vessels (up to Malacca-max) would be
done in a phased manner.
The existing water draft of 16m would be
increased to 18.7m progressively. The initial handling capacity would then
increase from 1.1 million TEUs to 4.1 million TEUs.
RFP documents would be available from 8
February 2005
