Nuclear Power Corporation of India has begun
loading of natural uranium fuel bundles for the fourth unit its Tarapur Atomic
Power Plant (TAPP-4) in Maharashtra. There are 392 channels to be loaded, each
of which will take 13 bundles. The fuel loading process is expected to be
completed by end-January 2005. The plant is likely to reach criticality in
February 2005.
TAPP-4 is India's largest pressurized heavy water
reactor (PHWR) of 540 MWe. It is being developed ahead of TAPP-3 that is also
under construction.
