National Thermal Power Corporation has placed the
EPC contract valued at Rs.1,900 crore for the 1,980 MW Barh super thermal power project at Barh in Bihar
on Technopromexport (TPE) of Russia.
The Russian company has piped domestic major Bharat
Heavy Electricals and Doosan of Korea, in the race.
It is reported that NTPC awarded the contract to
TPE despite its failure to meet pre-qualification criteria. NTPC, nevertheless,
awarded the contract to TPE in view of their track record, and that TPE had
submitted the lowest bid. It is learnt that BHEL's bid, in this case, was the
highest.
TPE, in 2004, had bid for NTPC's Sipat thermal
power project in Chhattisgarh, but could not bag the contract.
TPE, owned by the Russian government, has
successfully executed 160 thermal power plants with aggregate capacity of 69,800
MW in 35 countries.
