Tata Steel is planning to set up its second plant in Jharkhand with an eventual capacity of 10
million tpa.
The project, recently approved by the company's
board, will be implemented in
two phases over a period of nine years. entailing an investment of Rs.45,000-55,000 crore
Phase I of 5 million tpa will be completed in four years at a cost of Rs.15,000-20,000 crore.
Phase II will same capacity will be completed within five years thereafter,
taking the total capacity to 10 million tpa. The second phase would cost around
Rs.30,000 crore.
Tata Steel is understood to be commencing a
detailed study to identify a suitable location, the required infrastructure and
other related issues.
The study is expected to be completed by
end-September 2005, after which the company will submit a formal proposal to the state
government, paving the way for an MoU between the two entities.

On 30 August 2005, Tata Steel indicated that
it would identify the location for the proposed plant by 10 September 2005 and
sign the MoU with the Jharkhand government by 25 September 2005.
