The 540 MWe (Unit No.4) of Nuclear Power
Corporation of India's Tarapur Atomic Power Plant (TAPP) in Maharashtra went
commercial on 13 September 2005. The unit had reached criticality on 6 March
2005 and achieved grid connectivity in June 2005.
The unit is India's largest power unit in
operation of any kind, and has been commissioned seven months ahead of schedule.
Unit No.3 of TAPP will be commissioned in the
next nine months or so. The two units, with aggregate capacity of 1,080 MW, will
supply power to Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Goa and
Daman & Diu.
With TAPP-4 in operation, NPCIL's aggregate power
capacity has risen to 3,310 MWe through 15 units. NPCIL has expressed confidence
in going in for 700 MWe generators in future, the designing work of which is
complete.
