The Orissa government is reportedly planning to
sign seven MoUs for steel projects in the state, on 4 November 2005. The total
investment envisaged is around Rs.30,000 crore.
This will take the total number of metals-related
MoUs signed by the Orissa government to 44, with aggregate investment of Rs.1.8
trillion.
The seven companies in question are Jindal Steel
& Power, Bhushan Steel & Strips, Rungta Mines, Status Steel Indian,
Brand Alloys, Jaya Balaji, Jyoti Steels and Eastern Steel & Power.
The largest MoU to be signed would be that of
Jindal Steel & Power, which is planning to increase the capacity of its
earlier-proposed steel project from 2 million tpa to 6 million tpa. The project
would also include a 900 MW captive gas-based power plant. The total investment
in the project would be Rs.13,135 crore. It will come up in the Angul district,
as against the earlier-proposed Keonjhar. The MoU for the original project (2
million tpa) was already signed in October 2004.
