Bharat Heavy Electricals and Doosan Heavy Industries of Korea are reportedly in the final race for CESC's new 250 MW Budge Budge plant in West Bengal. While technical bids were opened in February 2006, financial bids for the Rs.1,000 crore project are likely to be opened soon.

It is further learnt that Dong Fang of China had also bid for the project but could not qualify. One of the major pre-condition was the experience of having constructed ten power plants -- a criterion that Dong Fang could not satisfy.

It may be recalled that on 27 February 2006, West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, had laid the foundation stone for this 250 MW power unit (Unit No.3) of CESC's Budge Budge power plant in South 24 Parganas district.

The power project was first announced in September 2003. The existing two units (2x250 MW) of the Budge Budge power plant were part-financed through World Bank assistance.
