Tinplate Co of India, a Tata Steel
subsidiary, has announced a Rs.200 crore expansion programme to double its
tinplate making capacity.
Currently, a Rs.57 crore expansion
programme is underway that would take capacity to 1.8 lakh tpa from 1.7 lakh
tpa. The capacity doubling project will be launched thereafter. Project details
will be firmed up by May 2006. The expansion programme will also mark the entry
of Tinplate Co in the beverages can business.
TCIL has steadily increased its
capacity over the past few years. In 2002-03, the company expanded its capacity
from 0.90 lakh tpa to 1.13 lakh tpa, at an investment of Rs.10 crore. Since
then, periodic expansions have been made taking the total capacity to 1.80 lakh
tpa.
