It is learnt that as many as 23 urban
development projects has been approved under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban
Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
The Rs.50,000 crore project to be
implemented in 63 cities is the most ambitious project in the area of urban
development in the country. The amount to be released for the year 2006-07 is
Rs.5,500 crore.
In addition to these projects, 16 city
development plans (CDPs) has already been appraised by National Institute of
Urban Affairs (NIUA) and National Institute of Public Finance & Policy (NIPFP)
and several others are in the pipeline.
The cities that has been considered or
in the process of consideration are Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Vishakhapatnam,
Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Surat, Vadodara, Raipur, Madurai, Coimbatore, Ajmer-Pushkar,
Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Ujjain, Greater Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune and Jaipur.
The three main components of the
project are infrastructure, basic services to urban poor and wide ranging urban
sector reforms which aims to create productive, efficient, equitable and
responsive cities.
