Asian Development Bank will double its
assistance to India over the next three years, according to Union finance
minister, Mr P Chidambaram. Over the next three years, total ADB assistance to
India would be $7.3 billion with an indicative spread of $2.25 billion in 2006,
$2.45 billion in 2007 and $2.65 billion in 2008.
There has been some improvement in
India's share in ADB's lending portfolio with the country's share growing from
12 per cent in 2004 to 16 per cent in 2005. In 2006, this is expected to rise to
20 per cent.
ADB, since it began its operations in
1986, has so far lent $14 billion to India. Incidentally, ADB would be holding
its annual meeting in India (New Delhi) on 3 May 2006. This is the second time
that India would be hosting the annual meet after one in 1990.
